Behavior of dairy heifers after increasing the amounts of milk replacer powder added to whole milk PAB
Rufino,Sâmara Raiany de Almeida; Azevedo,Rafael Alves de; Furini,Pamela Michéli; Campos,Mariana Magalhães; Machado,Fernanda Samarini; Pires,Maria de Fátima Avila; Lima,Juliana Aparecida Mello; Coelho,Sandra Gesteira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of increasing the contents of total solids (TS) in whole milk, by adding increasing amounts of milk replacer powder, on the behavior of dairy heifers. Holstein-Gyr crossbred heifers (n = 60) were distributed in four treatments: 13.5, 16.1, 18.2, and 20.4% TS. From 5 to 55 days of age, heifers received 6 L per day of liquid feed, which was reduced by half from 56 to 59 days. Heifers were weaned at 60 days of age and monitored until 90 days, and their behavior was evaluated weekly. During gradual weaning and after weaning, heifer behavior was recorded 1 hour before and 1 hour after liquid feed was offered, and, during weaning, it was evaluated by the scan method. Heifers fed liquid feed...

Effect of traffic noise on Scinax nasicus advertisement call (Amphibia, Anura) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Leon,Evelina; Peltzer,Paola M.; Lorenzon,Rodrigo; Lajmanovich,Rafael C.; Beltzer,Adolfo H..
ABSTRACT Increased anthropogenic-made sounds such as traffic noises contribute to acoustic pollution, which produces deleterious effect on song-vertebrates. We compared the advertisement call of Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) males in natural (as a reference or control, Site A) and Sites affected by traffic noises (Site B). Call structure was recorded and it was amplified in sonograms (software Raven Pro 1.5). Seven variables were measured on its advertisement call: duration (s), number of notes, number of pulses per note, maximum and minimum frequency (kHz), dominant frequency (kHz) and amplitude (dB). In addition, at each Site the background noise (the fundamental frequency, F0 and amplitude, dB) was measured. The amplitude of background noise reached...

Individuality in the female songs of wild Silvery Gibbons (Hylobates moloch) on Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Dallmann, Robert; Geissmann, Thomas.
This is the first study comparing individuality in the songs among several gibbon species. All gibbon species produce loud, long and elaborate song bouts in the early morning. Silvery gibbons (Hylobales moloch) ,i differ from other hylobatids, however, in that duet song bouts are absent, male singing appears to be uncommon and most song bouts are female solo songs. Consistent individual differences easily distinguish neighboring females m the field, and it has been suggested that female individuality is particularly high in H. moloch in order to compensate for the lack of a family-labeling male song. The aim in this study is to test this hypothesis by quantifying individuality in H. moloch and comparing it with data on song individuality in two other...

Redescription of the advertisement call of Aplastodiscus arildae (Cruz & Peixoto) and description of the call of Aplastodiscus weygoldti (Cruz & Peixoto) with general notes about the genus in Southeastern Brazil (Anura, Hylidae) Zoologia
Orrico,Victor G. D.; Carvalho-e-Silva,Ana Maria P. T.; Carvalho-e-Silva,Sergio P..
The study of anuran advertisement calls is very significant for it is an important premating premating mechanism. Herein we redescribe the advertisement call of Aplastodiscus arildae from an area near type-locality and describe the advertisement call of A. weygoldti comparing them to previously described advertisement calls of species of the genus Aplastodiscus. Both advertisement calls are simple, non-modulated calls, very similar to each other, but significantly different in what matters to call duration. We describe the first distress call registered for the genus, the distress call of A. arildae, that does not have rigid form and was only recorded for one individual. Some general notes of the genus Aplastodiscus are given.

Reproductive behavior of Leptodactylus mystacinus (Anura, Leptodactylidae) with notes on courtship call of other Leptodactylus species Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira Filho,Júlio C. de; Giaretta,Ariovaldo A..
Here we present data on the reproductive behavior of Leptodactylus mystacinus (Burmeister, 1861), including details on courtship behavior. We also describe and compared the courtship calls of L. mystacinus, L. furnarius Sazima & Bokermann, 1978 and Leptodactylus sp. (L. aff. andreae). Field works were conducted in Uberlândia (central Brazil). During courtship, a female approaches a calling male and is led to a previously excavated chamber; a female can approach a silent male that beat his hands and/or feet on the ground as well. The courtship call of L. mystacinus consists of one single arch-shaped note (duration = 0.04 s) repeated 258 times per minute; the courtship calls of L. furnarius (0.06 s, 84 times per minute) and Leptodactylus sp. (0.15 s,...

Teat order affects postweaning behaviour in piglets Ciência Rural
Sommavilla,Roberta; Costa,Osmar Antonio Dalla; Honorato,Luciana Aparecida; Cardoso,Clarissa Silva; Hötzel,Maria José.
The objective of this study was to investigate if piglets that suck anterior teats differ from the others in the litter in birth weight, if they have higher growth rate during lactation, and if this affects behaviour and post-weaning weight gain, when piglets change to a solid diet. For this, the teat order of 24 litters was determined during suckling. Piglets were weaned on the 28thday of age, and 24 groups were formed, composed of one piglet that sucked on the first two pairs of teats (AT) and three piglets that sucked on the other teats (OT). Even though weight at birth did not vary according to teat order, weight gain at weaning differed between the groups (AT: 6.64, S.E. 0.20kg, OT: 5.73, S.E. 0.13kg; P<0.001). After weaning, AT piglets spent more...

The acoustic communication of the Polynesian megapode Megapodius pritchardii G. R. Gray Naturalis
Göth, A.; Vogel, U.; Curio, E..
The acoustic communication of the Polynesian megapode Megapodius pritchardii G.R. Gray, 1864, was studied and analysed for the first time. Adults pair up monogamously and the male produces so called whistles while guarding its mate. The three-element song of the male together with the females`s “coo” call are combined to produce a duet. Depending on the social context, either sex may initiate the duet. Both male song and duet serve mainly in territorial defence. Neighbouring pairs often answer by producing the same sound in response to any one of three vocalizations (song, duet, whistle). “Clucks” are additional sounds with a social function uttered by both sexes. When handled, adults and chicks utter “distress calls”; in chicks, these are the only sounds...

The advertisement call, color patterns and distribution of Ischnocnema izecksohni (Caramaschi and Kisteumacher, 1989) (Anura, Brachycephalidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Taucce,Pedro P. G.; Leite,Felipe S. F.; Santos,Patrícia S.; Feio,Renato N.; Garcia,Paulo C. A..
Ischnocnema izecksohni inhabits the gallery forests from the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Southern Espinhaço range, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, and it is considered endemic to this region. Its closest related species is I. nasuta according to the original description. We describe the advertisement call of I. izecksohni based on specimens recorded and collected at the municipality of Nova Lima, state of Minas Gerais, distant about 10 km straight line from its type locality. The advertisement call consists of a group of notes emitted sporadically without a regular interval between the calls. Call duration (n = 36 calls in four individuals) ranged from 1.03 to 1.85 s (= 1.52 ± 0.21 s) and the call rise time from 0.66 to 1.52 s (= 1.16 ± 0.25 s),...

The advertisement call of the phytotelm-breeding Melanophryniscus xanthostomus (Anura: Bufonidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Mângia,Sarah; Santana,Diego José; Mariotto,Lucas Ribeiro.
ABSTRACT Vocalizations are often useful for understanding taxonomic relationships among anuran species. Despite this usefulness, vocalizations are described in only nine of 29 in Melanophryniscus Gallardo, 1961. Here we describe the advertisement call of Melanophryniscus xanthostomus Baldo, Bornschein, Pie, Ribeiro, Firkowski & Morato, 2015 of a population from Serra Dona Francisca, municipality of Campo Alegre, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The advertisement call (of three males, total of 17 calls) comprises two segments (the first with short and single notes, followed by a multi-pulsed note), with a duration of 12.194-20.986 s, and dominant frequency of 3101-3618 Hz (first and second segments combined). The advertisement call of M. xanthostomus...

Vocal mechanisms in birds and bats: a comparative view Anais da ABC (AABC)
Suthers,Roderick A..
Vocal signals play a very important role in the life of both birds and echolocating bats, but these two unrelated groups of flying vertebrates have very different vocal systems. They nevertheless must solve many of the same problems in producing sound. This brief review examines avian and microchiropteran motor mechanisms for: 1) coordinating the timing of phonation with the vocal motor pattern that controls its acoustic properties, and 2) achieving respiratory strategies that provide adequate ventilation for pulmonary gas exchange, while also facilitating longer duration songs or trains of sonar pulses.

Vocalizações e interações acústicas em Hyla raniceps (Anura, Hylidae) durante a atividade reprodutiva Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Guimarães,Lorena dall'Ara; Bastos,Rogério P..
The vocalizations of H. raniceps (Cope, 1826) and their functions are described, including an analysis of the influence of temperature, weight, or SVL (snout-vent length) of males on the acoustic parameters. The vocalizations were recorded in three areas in Fazenda Lagoa Grande, Municipality of Pontalina, State of Goiás, central Brazil. Males began their vocalizations just before sunset, extending them, in some cases, to dawn of the following day. The peak of activities happened between 21h and 23h. The height of calling sites varied plenty, being the position horizontal in about 50% of them. Males defended sites in different areas during consecutive nights. Rain and strong winds interrupted the calling activities. Males emitted three vocalizations:...

What we don’t know about megapodes Naturalis
Jones, D.N..
While the growth in megapode studies has been extraordinary, much remains to be done. Further work is especially crucial if the many conservation projects that are planned and underway are to be based on a sound and reliable base of understanding. Thus, the ten projects proposed here are not directly conservation-orientated. Rather, they are aimed at elucidating aspects and issues that are needed for a more complete understanding of these remarkable birds. In particular, a plea is made for high quality natural history and for cultural sensitivity and awareness.
